Hi all! I've just moved back to Wellington and seem to be lacking the basic large furniture (such as a bed, sofa, chest of drawers, coffee table, bedside table, mini kitchen table and chairs).

If you've got surplus furniture taking up space and gathering dust, let me know. I've got a small place, so smaller items might be happier in my new home.

Thanks

The Journal Editor is after your trip reports and photos for inclusion in this year's journal. If you have been on a memorable trip and/or have some good photos now is the time to start writing. We would really like to get a broad mix of Club trips recorded in our Journal. Finished product should be sent to journal@wtmc.org.nz

To avoid disappointment and help with planning we recommend that you get in touch with Tony if you are aiming to submit an article. He can give you a deadline and advice on preferred article length and other stuff.

Also, we welcome feedback on what you'd like to see in our Journal and what you thought of the 2012 Journal. Send any feedback to the editor or promotions@wtmc.org.nz

The longer nights herald the start of the afterwork rogaine series with walk/run and mountain bike events. Check out the websites:
www.mapsport.co.nz/wellyrogs for info and enroll on the orienteering calendar found at www.maptalk.co.nz

It is cheaper to join the Hutt Valley Orienteering (OHV) Club to get the discount rogaine entry rates. All rogaines are run under the umbrella of OHV to cover public liability insurance.

Info is also published on the Ridgerunners Facebook page, but you still have to pre enroll on line as above.

We are delighted to invite climbers, skiers and all mountain enthusiasts to the Chamonix Mountain Festival. This gathering, organised by mountaineers for mountaineers, will take place during the first week of June in the iconic Chamonix Mont-Blanc. Everybody will be welcome in this truly international meet. Whether you come on your own, with a group or with a partner, whether you have done Alpine climbing before or not, you will have a chance to enjoy some stunning Alpine classics or ski touring routes.

Arc'teryx, DMM, Blue Ice, Idris Skis, Valandre and other top-of-the-range brands will be providing equipment to test and the days out will be complemented by an exciting line up of talks and screenings. We will not reveal too much yet but you can already look forward to the new award-winning feature documentary film "Petit Dru - The Disintegrating Mountain", with Andy Parkin as guest and a lecture on the 1st ascent of the Mazeno Ridge of Nanga Parbat by the 2013 Piolets d’Or awarded Sandy Allan.

Where: Chamonix Mont-Blanc, French Alps

When: 1st - 8th June 2013

With accommodation in a beautiful historic building in the very centre of Chamonix, great French food, a mini information centre providing assistance on conditions and route choice and, most importantly, fellow mountaineers from all over the world, you can already start preparing a list of your dream ascents.

€60 per day includes accommodation, food - full board, everyday lift pass, conditions info, gear testing, lectures, films, etc.
(For comparison even a cheapest accommodation, food and a lift pass, which is around €50, would cost you around €100 per day if you come on your own!)

No age limit, no climbing grade limit!

Find more information and register at http://www.chamonixmountainfestival.com/
"Join us for our first planting day for the year. We will be putting ngaio along the river banks.
That will require us to cut the gorse and stack it around the plants (to keep the sheep from damaging them), mulching the plants with water weed, and we will also search for any wandering willy that has been brought down in the floods and remove it before it becomes established.
Bring along your gloves and spades and help restore our regional park

Hello,

I've recently moved to Wellington (from the UK) and am looking for somewhere to store my sea kayak. A garage or shed would be ideal, but anywhere under cover could also be OK. Failing that, if you have a suitable garden that could also be useful as a stop-gap!

I live in Kelburn (in a house with no garage, and loads of steps up to the garden!) so anywhere in Wellington would be more or less OK. If you live near the sea that would be amazing!

My kayak is about 5.3m long, 0.5m wide and 0.3m high.

I'm happy to pay rent for the space.

Thanks,

Want to practice your navigation? Day walk 11 May (no replies)

Richard and I are leading a navigation day walk graded Medium on Saturday 11 May at Otaki Forks. We're going to head up and down some untracked ridges on the true left (southern) side of the Waiotauru river, in the Pukeatua vicinity.

This day walk is for you if:
1. You're not totally sure how to take a bearing (with your compass) but you're keen to learn and have moderate fitness. We'll spend some time practicing bearings and will also focus on terrain awareness.
2. You need a bit more practice with navigation to feel confident to lead a trip. There will be chances to take the lead and plenty of time to make (and correct!) mistakes.

To sign up, put your name on the sheet at club night or email vicepresident@wtmc.org.nz

Heuristics for river travel (3 replies)

Hello.

Does anyone have any good heuristics they like to use for estimating time for river travel? eg. When climbing a hill, there's a heuristic which suggests in a group of reasonably fit (not necessarily really fit) people, the group could expect to travel about 300 metres an hour. Faster with a small group of fast people, slower for a large group with one or two people who've never clambered over a tree root before, etc etc.

We had a walk down the Makaroro River (in the Ruahine) over Easter. We took some general guesses about the distance from the map's swirls, added a bit to compensate for how we'd probably not follow the exact same line as the middle of the river, factored in some more for possible gorginess. We generally did okay from intuition, but I still don't know specifically what rules we were following, if any.

I'm just interested to know if anyone has any actual rules or heuristics that they like to use for estimating this type of thing. I'll probably screw it up some time, and when that happens I'd like to be able to point a finger at the accepted procedure I was following, instead of taking the blame myself.

Cheers and thanks.

Is it your oilskin parka? The llama-wool scarf you bought in La Paz? The little gadget that tweets your precise whereabouts every 10 minutes along with your heart rate and the current temperature and humidity?

What I'm keen to do is have a Wed night session where a few of us spend as little as 5 minutes showing our "favourite" piece of tramping kit and saying why it's our favourite. Just 5 minutes! No pressure! Easy and little prep required.

All you need to do is turn up on 17 April, along with your item of kit, and perhaps, if you like, a pic or three of why its your fav.

"Favourite" is deliberately vague and subjective and can mean whatever you like. For instance it could mean

The best - "This is my Event hyperflex TXH-5 parka. It's so advanced that even in torrential storms, it repels liquid so fast that the rain doesn't get within a metre of you. And at the same time it wicks moisture so well that you can use it for making beef jerky when you're not wearing it. Plus it has a unique exothermic layer that means you can comfortably wear it in your underware at minus 15. When astronauts land on Mars, they'll be wearing Event hyperflex TXH-5 fabrics."

What you're most attached to - "I've had this hat since 1982, when my dad gave it to me. He got it from his dad before him. It's a beautiful leather hat that's oiled and polished with the sweat from four generations of my family."

With the best story - "This is the snow stake that was the only thing between me and oblivion, when I had that big fall in 2007 on our Mercedario expedition."

No reason in particular - "This is my tent, and I really like it. Any questions?"

I'll put a general call out but I know that you all have fantastic stories just waiting to come out. So please email me back and tell me just how keen you are, and what you will be showing off. Then turn up on 17 April and amaze your friends!
