Tararua severe weather warning
February 18, 2017 09:09AM
There has been an unprecedented severe weather warning issued for the Tararua Ranges. A spokesperson said that, ‘trampers should be prepared for wet and windy weather over at least the next few days which is in dramatic contrast to the calm and sunny conditions normally expected in the Tararuas. We do not want to alarm trampers but we are predicting similar weather to become prevalent in the future probably due to a perturbation in the southern oscillation and they should now consider packing wet weather clothing when they plan a trip’.
An outdoor retail store manager spoken to welcomed the news. ‘We have boxes of unsold rain jackets that we can now sell to Tararua trampers instead of the cotton T-shirts and sunhats they have traditionally bought’.
